Calculator: Estimate November Partial SNAP Benefits

The USDA announced it would be issuing 65% partial SNAP benefits for the month of November due to the ongoing government shutdown. However, because of how the change is being applied and how SNAP benefits are calculated, many households will receive far less than 65% of their typical monthly benefits.

How are these partial benefits calculated?

USDA provided the following guidance to states to calculate partial SNAP benefits for the month of November:

“The amount of benefits shall be calculated by reducing the maximum SNAP allotment amount to 65 percent for the applicant’s household size and then deducting 30 percent of the household’s net income from the reduced maximum SNAP allotment amount.”

It’s more complicated than simply reducing all household benefits by 35%. Only household who were already receiving the maximum monthly SNAP benefit will see a 35% reduction. All other households will see an even greater reduction in their benefits, with some receiving no partial benefits at all.
